Tip O’Neill’s granddaughter marries longtime girlfriend at Glen Echo Park

They’d been best friends for 12 years and in a relationship for nearly six, when Michaela O’Neill Daniel, the granddaughter of former House speaker Thomas P. “Tip” O’Neill, Jr., proposed to Lindsay Sariena Greene last October during an evening walk along the Hudson River in Manhattan. Still, Greene, who said the couple realized “this is my person” last year, was completely caught off guard.

Wait, even when Daniel pulled out her laptop and pressed play on a slide show of pictures charting the course of their relationship?

“Michaela always had her computer. She was working on a campaign at the time,” explained Greene, “So I didn’t think it was weird at all.” Daniel, once the senior education adviser for former New York City Council speaker and mayoral candidate Christine Quinn, is now working in Mayor Bill de Blasio’s administration.

The last photo in the slideshow had an important caption: “Will you marry me?” and eight months later, the two Washingtonians (Daniel graduated from Walt Whitman High School and Greene from National Cathedral) tied the knot at Glen Echo Park in Maryland.

The more than 350 guests, including Debbie Dingel, Democratic congressional candidate and wife of Rep. John Dingell (D-Mich.), were told to dress by wedding dresses online “festival casual” (that’s a new one, we think) for the carnival-themed, kid-friendly affair. The ceremony was held in a grassy area and most sat on the ground picnic-style. Both brides wore white–a Laundry by Shelli Segal summery frock for Daniel and a lacey Tadashi Shoji for Greene.

After the vows, which the couple wrote themselves, the crowd headed to the park’s historic 1921 carousel and the reception was held in the bumper car pavilion. And if this doesn’t already sound like the best wedding with cheap wedding dresses in the history of weddings, there was beer pong–and a temporary tattoo table.

“We did a Soul Train line,” said Susan O’Neill, Michaela’s mother, who danced down the two-step tunnel with Deborah Greene, Lindsay’s mother. “It was spectacular in every sense of the word.”

The couple, both 32, graduated with honors from Harvard (Daniel “magna cum laude” and Greene “cum laude”) and both attended the Yale School of Management. What’s next, dual Nobel Peace prizes? They will be keeping their names and will return to their home in Manhattan after a honeymoon in Hawaii.
